Find SSD Candidate Volumes
Solid State Devices (SSDs), also known as Flash Drives, form a special tier because of their exceptional performance and high price levels.
You can use SSDs to improve the overall response time for your configuration. Additionally, you can use them to significantly reduce the number of physical disks in your storage systems.
By moving the appropriate workloads onto SSDs, the average backend access density of the workloads remaining on spinning disks can be decreased so dramatically that larger physical disks can be used for the remaining workload.
Automated tiering solutions can automatically move "hot" data to SSD's improving the performance of the storage system. IntelliMagic still recomends the use of IntelliMagic Balance however, because its move recomendations go beyond what automated tiering provides and can be a good complement to them in order to reduce overall costs and improve the total amount of work that can be safely done on the configuration.
In some cases, IntelliMagic Balance will avoid the necessity of adding SSD's and often it will reduce that number of SSD's required.
