IntelliMagic Balance

IntelliMagic Balance significantly improves the performance capacity of z/OS storage hardware.

It creates a list of easy logical volume moves for existing or new hardware that will ensure the workloads are spread among the available hardware resources in an optimal fashion.

The effect of these moves is often at least 30% additional performance capacity on the storage hardware, so more work can be safely done.  This removes hotspots and can, in some cases, avoid the expensive addition of SSDs, and it will allow the hardware to perform adequately for significantly longer periods of time.

IntelliMagic Balance uses proprietary algorithms to create the best possible mapping for placing volumes on storage hardware, based on an analysis of measurement data from the current configuration. It can also be used to create a mapping for merging small logical volumes (e.g. 3390-3) into large logical volumes (e.g. 3390-54 or EAVs) so that this migration can be accomplished with minimal risk. It takes into account many factors including SMS and storage groups.

Using manual methods it is virtually impossible to make optimal data placement choices, considering the fact that workloads need to be well-balanced across the physical devices for every time interval. If volumes that are very active at the same time are located on the same RAID array group, this imbalance greatly reduces the throughput potential of the storage hardware.
