IntelliMagic announces RMF Magic Version 5.1: More Effective Storage Performance Management for EMC and SRDF/A

IntelliMagic announces the availability of RMF Magic version 5.1. RMF Magic is a storage performance management product, supporting z/OS attached disk storage systems from all vendors. It combines SMF and RMF or CMF input data with built-in intelligence to analyze and optimize storage system throughput and performance. RMF Magic version 5.1 introduces new support to track EMC asynchronous remote replication (SRDF/A) performance, and offers extended analysis capabilities for the EMC storage system back-end.

The new RMF Magic feature to report on EMC SRDF/A performance uses the EMC SMF records as input. It allows EMC users to track SRDF/A performance, showing both average values and exceptions that may cause problems.  With this support, EMC users can graphically monitor SRDF/A health and see performance issues develop before they cause SRDF/A sessions to drop.

RMF Magic Version 5.1 also reports on the EMC back-end, showing the performance per array group for RAID-10 and RAID-5 configurations. This is achieved by processing the SRDF mirror position configuration data, which shows the logical to physical device mapping reported by the SRDF Host Component software. This new support enables customers to find hot-spots in the array groups, and to gain the necessary information to move very busy logical volumes to less utilized array groups.

“These new functions allow customers to manage the performance of their EMC storage systems more effectively by combining RMF and SMF input with an automatically generated SRDF report”, says Gilbert Houtekamer, managing director of IntelliMagic. “RMF Magic now allows our users to drill-down from storage system to array group to z/OS logical volumes for equipment from all vendors.”

RMF Magic version 5.1 provides many other new functions not specifically related to EMC hardware.  With the ability to define customized volume groups, users can track performance for all volumes related to a particular application. This includes showing the 90th percentile per shift for all the performance metrics per group. This grouping is important for setting and validating service level commitments.  RMF Magic also provides new SSD candidate selection reports at the dataset level. These reports show the most active datasets that are worth placing on the more expensive but excellent performing Solid State Drive technology.

More details about this release will be announced in webinar that IntelliMagic offers for the European and American time zones on July 13th, for which you can register at our webinar page.
